G. V. ECology Club established
The paragraph below was written as part of an application for an award, but explains very clearly the beginnings of the club, as well as the enthusiasm and spirit with which the club members approached ecology issues:
Brief Story of the Club
"Interest in our environment has been increasing among young people, but not until this year has reached Golden Valley Junior High.
The Ecology Club was formed last November. Immediately it had at least 150 interested members. Eventually membership increased to 200, of which at least 120 participated actively in several of the 14 major activities. The ninth graders were especially strong members.
These students have shown seriousness of purpose, a real concern for the environment not only in their own immediate area, but all over (the) United States, and the world. They were not only concerned, but did something about it, and spent several Saturdays and many hours, working enthusiastically for the improvement of the community.
I have sponsored clubs for several years, but I have never seen anything like this. Most of the time club membership dwindles down to 10-15 after the election of officers, while this has increased, and members have shown such an enthusiasm that the sponsors could hardly keep up with the organizing of activities.
It has been a real pleasure for Miss Wallace and for me to have worked with such a fine group (and large) of young people, and I wrote this nomination at the urging of Dean Simmons only because I feel that others should know that this generation has lots of great members."
