anti-littering campaign
"Tired of trash? Well, then join the Ecology Club:
On a sunny December 12, about 40 members of the club marched up to 40th Street, and picked trash, papers and cans up along the roadside. It was really fun! Each member received a prize. After we had finished, we all went to the park for hot dogs and cokes. Altogether we gathered 722 pounds of assorted trash. We were joined by Ecology Clubs from other schools. The day was finished off with a fun game of football with Miss Wallace.

Soon after the Golden Valley Ecology Club was formed, the first trash pick-up took place in December, as is reported above in the club's first newsletter. This took some organization to gather needed items: old coffee-bean burlap sacks for collecting the trash, gloves for the students to use, as well as vehicles for removing the collected trash. An army truck was recruited for the event, as well as family cars with trailers. Cleaning up this area around the school itself was a rewarding experience for the students and residents alike.

Quotes from students:
"People in passing cars looked at us and maybe decided to help ecology too." - Cecily D.
"I think more people should care about our greatest problem today - pollution" - Leslie B.
"It was fun to talk to people who actually came out of their houses to watch." - Christie B.
"It was really rewarding. Everybody who went by gave us funny looks. Then we met with our friends from other schools. It really was better than lying in bed and watching T.V. on sleepy Saturday mornings." - Steve B.
