ACtivities - what we did...

As a club, what could we do ourselves to help our environment and perhaps even change the future?  Check out our activities here:

Anti-Littering Campaign

The Ecology Club really started with one teacher's shocked reaction at how the students treated the lunch area, as well as the whole campus.  After querying both students and the school janitor, an anti-littering campaign began - and picking up trash, plus fun activities afterwards, became the "cool" way to spend an otherwise boring Saturday...

Recycling - Newspapers, Bottles & Cans

Newspapers, mountains of them.  The Ecology Club students tried to imagine what would happen in a decade if everyone read the paper, and then just threw it away in the trash.  The group came up with an innovative way to make their point...and began to also explore the new frontier of recycling metal and glass resources.

Tree-Planting & Reseeding

The Southern California wildfires were not a recent problem for the Inland Empire, but as the air became harder to breath, tree appreciation came to the forefront.  Trees provided clean oxygen as we provided the carbon dioxide they needed - we were symbiotic, so we learned in biology class.  In the meantime, the dangers of erosion after the wildfires became apparent, and thus tree-planting and reseeding became a tangible way for us to help our environment.

Bikeways & Bike-lockers

What was one way to prevent air pollution?  Bicycle riding!  Not only was it an efficient way to get to where you were going, but it was good excercise as well.  But in the car-centric world of the early 1970s, bike riding was generally just for fun, and difficult on those smoggy days.  There were no official bike lanes, and no safe place to store the bikes at school.  How could the trend be reversed?  The Ecology Club found ways to bring attention to biking and its benefits.
